Your comments echo my thoughts! I'm a retired scientist who is extremely frustrated by the US governments attacks on science and its abandonment of action on climate change.
Encourage all those reading to become paid subscribers! Yours has always been a clarion voice, and I appreciate you. I was in Altadena last week to see my son graduate; the ground and air felt more arid than ever, but maybe I'm just imagining things. I look forward to this next chapter.
Thank you for all the work you have done on the most important issue of our times. I can only imagine how frustrating it's been. Capitalism, and the selfish culture that has arisen around it, is the reason for all the resistance to reality you've seen. Until we dismantle capitalism (no easy task, to put it mildly) we're in extreme, probably existential trouble.
I also loved the film, ‘Don’t Look Up’ which I hear was inspired by your life as a scientist.
Fun fact: I, too, practice Vipassana Meditation.
All that being said… human connection is priceless. I value human connection over capitalism any day.. and I felt TRUE connection listening to your wisdom about the current state of the climate, how much you care for humanity and your story in general. You are a good human in my book!
Thanks for being a voice in the wilderness. I recognized parallels of your career path and your family dynamic in my own. (FWIW, you didn’t seem crazy in the Pro Publica article.) As an architect, I’ve advocated, practiced and taught so-called sustainable design for close to three decades. I was so hopeful and evangelical at first. We know better! We’ll do better! Ha! Not so easy.
I’ve encountered other career scientists who gave up their first love in the service of climate science. Possibly thinking, I’ll do this for a bit until world leaders and countries change their ways, then get back to what I’m meant to be doing. I have to believe everything you, and the rest of us, are doing is not for nothing. We’re meant to follow our hearts even though we can’t know where it all leads.
Peter, thank you for all you've done. I fought hard, too, until NASA's climate website was "retired" in February 2024. I continue to fight every single day.

I'm living up on the Central Coast of California, working part-time on offshore wind (under and NWF grant). It's a battle up against a local group in bed with the Heartland Institute and CFACT. I also have my own website and continue to try to spread the word! eco-nana.com
I can imagine! Many former colleagues call JPL a clusterfuck (and I don't like to swear). I'm just sick about the loss of so many good people and all of the amazing science that's been demolished. I'll keep fighting until I'm in the ground (in an eco-friendly way, of course!).

Hello from Chatham County, NC. I just saw you on Democracy Now.
I wanted to let you know that you’re the reason that I haven’t flown anywhere in more than 11 years. Maybe I would’ve eventually quit flying without hearing what you had to say on the subject, but it meant a lot to me that a climate scientist was willing to state unequivocally that commercial aviation is unsustainable for the planet and morally indefensible. Anytime I hear anyone say that making small changes in your lifestyle for the benefit of the climate, such as driving an electric car, won’t add up to any meaningful difference in terms of carbon emissions, I think of you and the example that you set for me. And I hope that someday I’ll be an example for someone else. One person‘s small lifestyle change can grow into a movement.
Thank you for your passionate work and advocacy for the planet and for your willingness to speak truth to power. I am so sorry for the injustices you have endured that has led to your forced resignation. Damn the idiocy of the Trump administration. I wish you well on your new path.
My sincere apologies, Peter. You are one of my favorite spokes people and I've always loved quoting you! You are really everyone's favorite climate hero and I sincerely hope to see you and Scientist Rebellion in nyc soon. The world needs to hear your voice! I also have you quoted in some of our literature in Washington Square Park, where we talk about climate nearly every day. It's rebellion. Or extinction! Humans can and will survive this!
To my mind, yours is the most honest voice on the climate emergency- my thanks and best wishes for your future.
